Hens and Chicks
Hens and Chicks (Sempervivum) are hardy, low-growing succulent perennials known for forming rosettes and producing offsets (“chicks”) around the main plant (“hen”). They are ideal for rock gardens, containers, and low-maintenance landscapes.
Key Characteristics
Form: Mat-forming succulent rosettes
Height: Typically 5 cm to 15 cm
Spread: 15 cm to 60 cm (depending on variety)
Foliage: Thick, fleshy leaves in green, red, or purple tones
Flowers: Small, star-shaped blooms in summer (after which the rosette dies, leaving offsets to continue growth)
Growing Conditions
Hens and Chicks are extremely low-maintenance and drought-tolerant:
Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade
Soil: Well-drained, sandy or rocky soil
Watering: Very low; avoid overwatering
Maintenance: Minimal; remove dead rosettes if desired
Hardiness
Hardy to Zones 3–8, making them well suited for Central Alberta gardens (Zones 3b–4a)
Garden Uses
Hens and Chicks are ideal for:
Rock gardens and alpine-style plantings
